The South African Krugerrand was first manufactured in 1979 and is legal tender. The purity is 22 karat gold and contains a full troy ounce of gold. Copper is added to the gold content to make each coin hard enough to resist denting and scratching. The obverse depicts Paul Kruger, President of the original South African Republic from 1883-1902. The reverse depicts the Springbok, the national animal of South Africa.
